Glossary

Lockdown is a security state of a facility when special measures are engaged to limit personnel movement and communication in designated lockdown areas. Lockdown may be limited to a certain part of the facility, in which case it is called 'partial lockdown'. Facility security personnel and/or garrison (if present) can move between the lockdown areas if authorized by facility central command. Depending on the nature of the facility movement restriction can be enforced by lethal means (either by security personnel and/or automated means, including gunservitors, turrets, etc.). In general case lockdown has two levels: unlocked and locked, where former corresponds to a normal state of the facility and the latter - to the maximum movement and communication restrictions. Note that some facilities may have additional lockdown levels, consult corresponding operational instructions of the particular facility for more information. Lockdown does not prevent access from/to outside, though it is still limited to the cases authorized by both internal and external command. Note that two authorizations are needed, see 'Quarantine' for comparison.

Quarantine is a security state of a facility when special measures are engaged to prevent the hazardous content from getting outside of the facility or its part (regardless of the content nature). Quarantine is non-exclusive with the lockdown and usually requires one. Depending on the nature of the facility quarantine may be enforced with the lethal means (up to the total (self)destruction of the facility). In general case quarantine has three levels: warning, limited and full. First level is set when the risk of hazardous content leak is detected and requires partial lock-down of the affected areas. If the leak is confirmed, the locked down part is set to limited quarantine. If limited quarantine fails to contain the hazardous content, it is escalated to full. Note that quarantine in most cases does not prevent access to the facility (or its part) from outside, though such decision is in jurisdiction of external authorities only.

Security protocols for <<ACCESS DENIED>> research facility lockdown

As for special purpose of the facility, the default state, while still being called 'unlocked' imposes restrictions of personnel movement and interaction between on-going projects. Each project has it's own dedicated part of the facility with security perimeter enabled, the part includes hab-blocks and recreational areas for the personnel. In a sense each project can be regarded as a sub-facility with it's own internal lockdown protocols. Thus the 'partial lockdown' means that at least on sub-facility lockdown status was set. The full lockdown therefore requires all sub-facilities to be in the lockdown states.***

Sub-facility authorities**** are responsible for setting its lockdown status and notifying facility central command. Central command is responsible for unlocking, quarantining or sealing-off the sub-facility after the situation was resolved.

(***) The facility in question has unused parts, that are sealed and completely isolated, those include the facilities that weren't retrofitted after the station <<ACCESS DENIED>> recovery or become unusable due to the accidents. These sub-facilities are excluded for the means of defining lockdown.
